McCarthy

A fixture in Bishop Kelly’s starting lineup for four years, senior Cody McCarthy was named Idaho’s Gatorade Football Player of the Year on Thursday.

McCarthy, a linebacker and fullback for the 2010 4A state champions is the third Knight to earn the honor. Mike Sladich won in 2004-05 and Cody Hawkins claimed the award in 2005-06.

At 6-foot-1, 226 pounds, McCarthy led the Knights to a 12-0 record this season, which was capped by a 41-28 victory against Blackfoot in the 4A state final at Bronco Stadium on Nov. 20.

The two-time 4A Southern Idaho Conference defensive player of the year and All-Idaho selection in 2008 and 2009 finished the season with 177 total tackles — including 10 sacks and 20 tackles for a loss. McCarthy also forced nine fumbles and intercepted four passes, rushed for 603 yards and seven touchdowns on 93 carries and caught 11 passes for 172 yards and three touchdowns.

Off the field, McCarthy maintains a 3.02 GPA in the classroom and has volunteered locally on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an area homeless shelter and youth football camps.

“He’s very athletic and moves extremely well,” said Jerry O’Mahony, head coach of rival Emmett High. “He’s got great work ethic, athletic ability, strength and football presence. I look forward to seeing him move on.”

McCarthy remains undecided on a collegiate destination.
